Lots of wild speculation about why Safari 3 for Windows.

I choose to accept the most simple explanations for behavior. There are still lots of sites that do not work well with Safari. The development of Safari for Windows is likely just a less expensive way for Apple to ensure a great web browsing experience for its Mac and iPhone users than what they are currently doing.

Assumptions

1. Apple spends lots of developer hours responding to Safari/web site incompatibility issues (a practice it actively encourages).

2. Getting Safari on Windows will grow the Safari user base which will result in Safari showing a greater distribution in web server user agent logs.

3. Web site developers will pay more attention to Safari when its distribution is greater.

Conclusion

The marginal effort to get to Safari on Windows above what they have already done with WebKit and iTunes can be offset by the reduction in developer hours required to respond to Safari/web site incompatibility bugs. Further, John Gruber suggests there is a healthy revenue stream from the Google search box which further helps the financial justification.

I would like to see the Location feature in the Network Preference pane automated and extended in a future version of OS X to cover more than network configuration.

Automated
OS X should sense its network surroundings to automatically set the Location or suggest to the user a change in the Location rather than requiring the user to explicitly set the Location each time it changes.

Extended
The Location should be able to configure more than TCP/IP settings. I won't pretend that I have thought of everything, but here's a list to begin with:

Default printer
Seems pretty easy to be able to specify a default printer by Location.

VPN
I would like for OS X to be able to automatically establish a VPN connection when I am on an untrusted network. I am pretty good about doing this myself, but I still catch myself in a panic when I sometimes open my PowerBook only to find Mail.app scrambling to sync itself.

Specify servers to login to and volumes to mount
I have different servers at work and at home that I would like to automount when I am at those locations.

NetNewsWire
Should be able to set the download frequency and whether or not to download rss enclosures because there's no reason to do this when I am on the road.

iTunes

Set the download frequency and Podcast stuff because it's not necessary when I am travelling.

Set the AirTunes speakers to stream to

Screen saver security toggle
There's no reason to turn this on when I'm at home.

Backup toggle
I don't want to even try to run a backup if I am not connected to my home LAN

SMTP server
I would be mostly covered by the VPN capability, but I would still like to be able to specify SMTP server by location.
